Sharks officials were thrown into a panic over the weekend, amid reports Reni Maitua was investigating the possibility of joining the North Queensland Cowboys.

Maitua began training with the Sharks last Monday, but is yet to put pen to paper on a one-year deal.

And when speculation emerged on radio that the former Bulldog was heading to Townsville to meet with Cowboys officials, Sharks officials became decidedly nervous.

It turns out Maitua was interstate over the weekend, but not in Townsville - he attended a wedding in Adelaide.

"Townsville? I'm not interested in playing for the Cowboys. I'm not interested in any other club whatsoever," Maitua told News Limited when quizzed about the possible development.

The speculation emerged just hours after Super League club Bradford confirmed they had signed former Sharks star Greg Bird on a one-year deal, with a further two-year option.

Maitua was signed by the Sharks as a like-for-like replacement for the former Test and Origin star.
