Eels legend Peter Sterling has thrown his support behind former teammates Ray Price and Eric Grothe, who are running a rebel ticket in this weekend's board election.

A News Ltd report released today Sterling backed the rebel push for change and said he was disappointed over recent slurs on the business credentials of Grothe and Price from current directors and CEO Denis Fitzgerald.

"The last thing in the world this ever needed to be was personal," he told News Ltd.

"The most important thing is that everyone who is running is doing so out of the right motivation. I'm looking at who is best individually - I think there needs to be some change."

Sterling, who admits not having a great relationship with Fitzgerald, said off the paddock there had been a lot of money lost from the club and on field recruitment needed improving.

On the other side of the fence are Eels greats Peter Wynn and Bob O'Reilly who have declared their loyalty to Denis Fitzgerald.

The Eels board vote will be held at 10am this Sunday.
