Hidden: A Rookwood Sculpture Walk 2012
Rookwood Cemetery is ‘enlivening’ its burial grounds in the fourth annual sculpture exhibition that takes place from 1 September – 14 October.
Hidden: A Rookwood Sculpture Walk is an on-site sculpture exhibition revealing artists’ responses to Rookwood, the largest cemetery in the Southern Hemisphere.
With a truly thought provoking subject, Hidden invites audiences to explore the Necropolis whilst admiring the 37 evocative works that feature amongst the graves. These works will address themes appropriate to the site, such as grief, loss, memory, death, mourning, spirituality, religion and heritage as well as the culture around memorial, eulogy, burial and ceremony.
The outdoor sculpture walk will once again be featured amongst the graves in one of the older sites of the cemetery and neighbouring areas. With views of the city on the horizon and a site enriched with ornate and elaborate headstones dating back to the late 19th and early 20th century, visitors are given a rare opportunity to immerse themselves in an extremely unique and captivating setting.
With the popularity of the event growing each year, the Trusts are once again partnering with the Sydney Olympic Park Authority, Auburn City Council and The GroundSwell Project to offer four separate awards for artists selected in Hidden 2012. Through the support of partners, the exhibition will also be complemented by an extensive public program. The 2012 public program includes an artist workshop, cemetery tours, curatorial tours and a short film screening targeted at young people and inspired by stories about Rookwood. Hidden: A Rookwood Sculpture Walk will launch on Saturday 1 September and run until Sunday 14 October 2012, starting at the northern end of Hawthorne Avenue. The walk will be open sunrise to sunset and is free to the public.
