Stories By Starlight- Candy Royalle
One of the must-see stars of Australia’s underground arts scene, Royalle is a dreadlocked, colourful and eclectic musical sensation.
Royalle’s cutting edge underground show Stories by Starlight rides a wave of success, combining powerfully-crafted stories with theatrics, vocal harmonies and a can't-look-away charisma. Her shows packed out the Melbourne’s Midsumma Festival in January and Adelaide Fringe in March earlier this year.
Stories by Starlight sees Royalle team up with three piece instrumentalists - Sloppy Joe. Royalle layers her rhythmic words and hypnotic voice with the unique sounds of funk, jazz and soul of the trio. The show tackles everything from love and sex to social injustice. It’s a seductive journey to the darker side of the human psyche.
“Expect a journey of self-discovery, some great tunes and even a little burlesque,” she says.
David Finnigan, curator of TiNA (This is Not Art, Experimental Arts) Festival once commented, “Candy is the kind of act you remember for years. And I don’t mean just vague memory; she kind of burns herself onto your heart and soul.”
Royalle dominated the poetry slam at the Walkley’s Freedom of Speech Dinner earlier this year. Her winning prose ‘An Ode to Journo’s,’ was ahead of its time - challenging the likes of Gina Rinehart to a thrilled crowd of the country’s most respected journalists - Peter Manning, Andrew Denton and Mike Carlton.
Those who know Royalle can count on one thing – some killer words and explosive theatrics. For an evening to remember join Royalle on a journey to the stars. Check out www.candyroyalle.com for more information.
