Comets Burn Up Under-Strength Wildcats
An injury-riddled Parramatta Wildcats senior men's team has fallen 100-70 to the Sydney Comets on Saturday night at the Alexandria Basketball Stadium, in Round Ten of the 2012 Waratah Championship League (WCL) competition. The Parramatta women suffered a similar fate, falling 83-39 to the Lady Comets in the second game of the night. The Parramatta men were already without Rory Sutton and Mark Musgrave prior to the start of the game but with injured centre Goran Veg playing with an obvious injury, out-played the Comets for a 23-21 lead at the end of the first term. Veg was re-injured during the opening term but played on under extreme adversity as the Wildcats continued to impress, holding the Comets to a 41-39 lead at half time. Fortune swung against the Wildcats when Veg could not continue in the third term and the Comets were quick to respond, racing away to a 68-47 lead at the end of the third term, then continuing in that vein of form to record a 30-point win. Wildcats head coach Merve Tait said "We (Parramatta) were great in the first half but when Goran got injured again, it allowed the Comets to increase their defensive pressure on other players in the team". "They (Comets) had bigger guards and they concentrated their defence on shutting down specific players, happy to let some our of bench players take any shot they liked". The Parramatta women were as brave as ever against the strong Lady Comets but it was one-way traffic from the opening whistle, with the home team untroubled to record a 44-point win. The WCL competition is now in recess for the Queens Birthday weekend and upon resumption, will see the Wildcats teams hosting the Bankstown Bruins on June 16 at the Auburn Basketball Centre - women at 3pm and men at 5pm.
