Storm Ebb and Flow Against Sharks

The fourth-placed Blacktown Storm have survived a scare before literally 'escaping' with a 70-68 win (in overtime) over the eleventh-placed Sutherland Sharks, on Sunday morning at the Kevin Betts Basketball Stadium, Mt Druitt in Round Ten of the Waratah Youth League Basketball competition. The Storm were overwhelming favourites to defeat the lowly-rated Sharks and lived up to pre-game expectations in the early stages of the game, coasting to a 36-22 lead at the half time break. Krenz Carlos (14 points) and Sam Brock (11) had been the chief destroyers for the Storm, whilst big-man Jordan West (7) was the only Sutherland player approaching double figures in the first half. It was hard to pinpoint where the game stalled for the Storm but credit must go to the young Sharks line-up, which never gave up hope in the early stages and grew in confidence the longer the game progressed. The margin between the two teams narrowed to just one point on a couple of occasions during the final term but the Storm would never relinquish the lead, maintaining their slim advantage until the final 0.03 seconds of the game. A desperation three-point shot from West brought the Sharks level at 52-52 and with effectively no time left on the clock, sent the game into overtime. The Storm made the early running in overtime and held of yet another desperate finish from the visitors for a heart-stopping 2-point victory.
