The annual Woollahra Council Youth Photographic Award and Short Film Prize (YPA) is now open to local high school students until 17 August 2012.

The YPA Themed Photographic Category focuses on Dichotomy (opposites: black & white; hot & cold; or more obscure opposites picked by the photographer) and is open to students in years 7-12.

Age specific categories for photo and film include Junior (years 7-9) and Senior (years 10-12) and have no set theme. Short films should be no longer than 6 minutes in length.

Coordinated by the Woollahra Library & Information Service, this popular annual event is an opportunity for students to develop their creative skills and have their works and talents recognised.

The Wentworth Courier is sponsoring the ‘People’s Choice Award’ again, allowing members of the public to vote online for their favourite photo and providing the winning student with $300 cash prize and well deserved recognition.

With the increase in popularity, the YPA can only accept entries that fit the criteria: • Photographic entries must be in Jpeg format; • Photographic entry sizes must be within 500KB (minimum) and 3MB (maximum); • Hard copy photographs must be A4 size only and mounted on black cardboard or mountboard and clearly labeled; • Short films must be submitted in DVD or Mini DV format and clearly labelled; and • Short films must not exceed 6 minutes.

“In 2011, we were really impressed with the popularity of the award, receiving a record number of 211 photographic entries,” said Liz Raleigh, YPA Organiser.

“This prize gives young creative people the chance to showcase their extraordinary talents publicly,” Mayor of Woollahra, Councillor Susan Wynne said.

Celebrity judges include award-winning short filmmaker Christopher Stollery and celebrated photographer Rex Dupain will be deciding which students get to share in the $2250 cash prizes for the Award.

Entries close Friday 17 August, 4.30pm and will be displayed at the Paddington Library from 11-23 September 2012.
