ACBA Invited to China
Other invited teams to this Tournament include semi-professional teams from Asia, Europe and the USA.
This is the first time that ACBA has received an invitation to participate in such a tournament and the Association is eager to proudly represent the Australian Asian community.
The squad will be fully sponsored by ACBA (making it our first semi-professional representative team), and is comprised of members from the Dragons and Tigers 2011 representative teams, as well as other talented members of ACBA who are currently playing in the Waratah Championship League (WCL) competition.
At the announcement of the squad, ACBA Chairman Leon Teh stated that this Dragons team signaled the achievement of one of the core goals of the Association at its inception over 15 years ago.
"When I was young, I did not have the opportunity to experience international basketball because there was no Association in existence which was able to take on the task to organise such a tour".
"One of our goals when establishing the ACBA was to provide the young members of the community with an opportunity such as this one in Beijing and to expose them to a higher level of basketball to improve their games".
"This trip is not like our end of year tour, as this Dragons team will be focused solely on competing and representing both the ACBA and Australia with pride and distinction."
"Following our successful Invitational Tournament last October, with teams from Beijing and Tianjin participating, there are many teams throughout Asia who have invited us to visit them and play exhibition games".
"We hope that this upcoming tournament in Beijing is just the first of many invitations ACBA shall receive going forward and that we will also have the chance to send our Development Team to compete in the future as well".
"The Dragons will be coached by ACBA veteran Craig Jacques with fellow veteran Joseph Kim appointed as assistant coach".
"The team manager is Bob Zhao and Josh McDonald and Bilal Chaker have been named co-captains of this talented team" said Teh.
