Bushfires threaten houses in Katoomba

The bushfire is burning around Cliff Drive and Birdwood Avenue with more than 100 firefighters on the scene including crews from nearby areas. The fire has spread into the valley below homes and three waterbombing aircraft are working to contain the fire.
A number of homes have been evacuated in the area of Cliff Drive and Birdwood Avenue at Katoomba. Approximately 450 students from Katoomba High School have been evacuated to The Edge Cinema as a precaution.
A relocation point has been established at the Three Sisters Motel, Katoomba Street, Katoomba.
An Emergency Alert telephone message has been sent to approximately 230 mobile phones and 300 landlines in the area.
Tourists are advised to avoid the area, particularly around Echo Point (Three Sisters Lookout).
The Rural Fire Service is asking locals to check and follow their Bush Fire Survival Plan.
If you do not have a Plan, decide what you will do if the situation changes. Leaving early is your safest option.
