Labor’s John Wakefield elected Mayor of Waverley after Sloan absence

In a further sign that relations among some of the Liberal Councillors may be strained, Sloan was voted Deputy Mayor even though she did not attend the meeting.
The election of John Wakefield as the Mayor is a significant coup for Waverley Labor and the Greens as the Mayor has a casting vote in the event of a deadlock, a right which former Mayor Sally Betts used regularly when there was a difference of opinion on the Council between Labor/Greens and the Liberal/Independents.
Councillor Wakefield first engagement as Mayor was to launch the Jingly Jangly Dancing Bones CD at the Waverley Library to a room full of pre-school aged children from Waverley, Bronte & Gardiner Childcare Centres. The significance of Wakefield’s election was lost on the crowd of little ones though it looked like it could have been a celebration party, complete with party snacks, dancing & singing.

A night of the long knives at Waverley Council! Did the Liberals who turned up vote for Kerryn Sloan vote for her to be Deputy Mayor or did just Labor and the Greens vote for the absent Liberal. This bit of information is missing & it would be interesting to know.

John Wakefield was opposed to the outrageous rate increase proposals by Sally Betts that will make our area unaffordable for the average working person. Wakeefield's suggestion that the capital works projects proposed by Council are all fully disclosed to the public was a good one. Then we can comment on where we think money should be spent. Perhaps we'll see more transparency under this Mayor into the detail of Waverley Council's very healthy finances.

Kerryn Sloan should not retain her seat at the next election. She is not fit for office. John Wakefield is an egotistal mayor who is rude and arrogant to any ratepayer who dares call him. The alliance between Labor and the Greens means that the needs of residents and local businesses are not being answered. Instead powertripping and dogma prevail while commonsense and local needs take a backseat. The backseat of the bus that is - Labor and the Greens also hate cars.
