Community Protest to stop clearing of endangered woodland on Penrith ADI site
ADI Cumberland Plains Woodland
The protest comes after a the Environmental Defenders Officers were successful on Friday in legal action that resulted in the bulldozers clearing land being halted until Monday. Greens MP David Shoebridge will join with local residents and forestry campaigners on site to raise their concerns about the imminent destruction of endangered woodland.
Community representatives from the Western Sydney Conservation Alliance will also be present.
To join the protest, meet at the Northern Road fence line, intersection with Borrowdale Way, Penrith at 9:30AM Monday 26 September 2011
"The protection of 100 hectares of the ADI site was a 2007 election commitment from the NSW Coalition. The NSW Planning Minister Brad Hazzard stated publicly in 2010 that if elected, the Coalition Government would honour this commitment," said Greens NSW MP and Planning spokesperson David Shoebridge.
"The Environmental Defender's Office has now been forced to commence proceedings to protect the endangered woodland on this site.
"Making promises to Western Sydney before an election was the easy part for Mr O'Farrell, it seems delivering on them once in power is much more difficult.
"The Greens and local activists are calling on the Government to deliver on their promises to protect this critically endangered woodland," Mr Shoebridge said.

"The NSW Liberals & Nationals are committed to conserving not only the Cumberland Forest land discussed at the 2007 election but want to go further to a more sustainable model that will protect flora and fauna through establishing ecological corridors as a starting point in future planning. In a NSW Liberals & Nationals government, it won't be just about protecting bits and pieces of high conservation lands - it will be about connecting them and sustaining Western Sydney's natural environment as it grows."
