A near-booked out event in NSW Parliament to show support for Wikileaks whistleblower Bradley Manning is a clear sign of the level of support in the community for his actions and concern for his well-being, according to Greens NSW MP and Justice spokesperson David Shoebridge.

"Bradley Manning is accused of exposing the secrets and lies of the U.S. Military, who then apparently subjected him to cruel punishment, earning Bradley the sympathy and respect of thousands around the globe," Mr Shoebridge said.

"The release of the information Bradley is alleged to have leaked has blown the lid on a culture of secrecy and deception underpinning governments across the globe. "Wikileaks has brought our attention to a vengeful culture of war, incarceration and distortion of the truth.

"There is little better evidence of this culture than the way in which Bradley himself was treated by the United States Military.

"For 10 months 23 year old Bradley was held in solitary confinement for 23 hours a day and was then subjected to the humiliation of standing naked for inspections.

"Public outcry about this inhumane and cruel treatment has already led to Bradley Manning being moved to a different facility under better conditions.

"Continued public pressure is required to ensure that he has a fair trial," Mr Shoebridge said.

Bradley Manning vs. the Culture of Revenge will be held in the NSW Parliament House Theatrette from 6:00-8:30PM on Tuesday 2 August. Speakers include Wendy Bacon (Centre of Independent Journalism), Dr Ben Saul (Sydney Centre for International Law), Professor Stuart Rees (Sydney Peace Foundation).
