For many Rabbitohs fans Chris Sandow personified the fighting underdog spirit of the South Sydney Football Club. So in the loss of Sandow to Parramatta, the Club hasn't just lost it's playmaker, it's also lost a player loved by the Souths fans, a player who against all the odds stacked against him, used his talent and passion and rose to be counted amongst the best. A player who inspired the kids of Redfern and La Perouse and beyond to believe that anything was possible.

In the next few days we'll get to hear what South fans think as they come to terms with the loss of what many considered 'a family member'. And Souths fans aren't know for pulling their punches, so it will be interesting to see whether the mood one of hurt, anger, understanding, indifference or whether most are philosophical about the commerical realities of a professional sport.

Souths had appealed to Sandow to stay with the Club despite reports that Souths was unable to come close to the money being offered to Sandow by Parrmatta. At the end of the day, the money Parramatta put forward was just too good and few players (or coaches for that matter)would have done differently.

Chris Sandow gave South Sydney Football Club the heads up yesterday that he would be joining the Parramatta Eels next season, in a deal rumoured to be worth up to $550,000 per year.

South's CEO Shane Richardson said the Club was ' very disappointed' but wished Chris 'best for the future'.

“Unfortunately for us he has met his Alan Bond,” said Shane Richardson.

As said in the article, we all understand the commercial realities of professional sport. Nevertheless, sometimes, it is really nice to see that when a club stands by a player who shows no form in the beginning and then comes to show brilliant form later on - that said player returns the favour through loyalty rather than put themselves back on the market to the highest bidder. In a world that is run by money, we all have hope that virtue holds greater weight than cash. Time and time again we're all proven wrong. I personally don't wish anything negative upon Chris Sandow. But I am greatly saddened and disappointed with this news - I actually thought that this was the kid who was going to prove that loyalty is one of those virtues that is still alive in professional sport.

Traitorous dog I hope he rots in the hell that is parramatta. Drop the scum to North Sydney Bears and play malcom webster as halfback for the rest of the season

I grew up at La Perouse, and I'm truly disappointed and even angry I think. I also think from a career perspective for him that he's made the poorer decision as parra is a club in structural, management, coach, player and team disarray - players are leaving, there's no depth of talent of focus as there now is at souths. they're setting up for a total 'rebuild', which will take a few years to come together. It's a bit like signing with souths say 4 or 5 years ago, before Crowe and Co took over. So for the sake of extra money ( and what ? I'm assuming $300,000 plus at souths isn't enough to have a pretty good life with ? ) I think he's opted for an inhibiting or more limiting football environment. I also can't understand why souths would sign Sutton before signing Sandow.

Was nothing and had nothing. Souths turned his life around. Sandow will go back to the bad old days at Parra! The grass is not always greener and you should of stayed as a mark of respect. A lot of players over the years could of changed clubs to earn more money but they choose to stay where they were happiest. Obviously Sandow's only motivation for the game is the almighty dollar. Shame on you!

Fed Up MRS posts

Same Ol same ol at Souths keeps the old codgers and lets go of the young with talent. Souths have had their chance and I believe while under Mr richardson who said“Unfortunately for us he has met his Alan Bond,” said Shane Richardson. Didnt Inglis find HIS Alan Bond in Russell Crowe. I believe He is not doing a good job if we can't afford tpo keep the best we have. We let Craig Wing go to keep Crocker (Richardson's words not mine) Crocker is now doing ok but it has taken a LONG time When are they going to realize it takes a committed team to win not 1 player INGLIS can't do it on his own

Sandow is quoted as saying he wanted a fresh start, something new - but a few weeks back he said he hoped he'd be staying at souths etc.... I think he's probably been poorly advised by his family ( reasons bove in earlier post ). I think too that 'loyalty' at south took a big dent when they sacrificed champion and a few others for Inglis.

Put him on the bench and bring on someone else. Dont waste any more time on him

Sad Rabbit posts

As many young ( and old ) fans are, my 7 year old is shattered. Chris is probably the best and most settled half we have had since Craig Coleman. Don't be too hard on him. Offer anyone an extra $250k per year and the dollar will always win. Be assured that his management group ( Titan ) would have been advising him to go. Players changing clubs is just a fact of life. The fans and the clubs management now need to plan for the future and move on. I sincerely hope that he doesn't get a hard time from our members at the next home game. He's only a kid and is still wearing the red and green.

@Sad Rabbit - it's still incomprehensible that they wouldn't have allocated enough contract cash to secure him, or why they signed Sutton before him - they MUST have been in two minds about keeping him, and he would've felt that. It cuts deep I think as he's just become a kind of hero from the last match, and almost in two previous matches too - and he was exciting and cheeky and added an incisive spark to the side - and that's been all been taken away from a very 'hopeful for success after a long time' returning fan base. I still cannot believe that they let his talent go.

Hey melbourne rabbit - Agree with what you say. John Lang said last year that Chris is a work in progress. From memory, pretty sure he said something about him potentially being the new Alfie Langer. Plenty of experts still have doubts about his ability to get a team around the park on a consistant basis. Sure the money was a massive factor. As you mentioned, he was probably feeling unsure about how committed Souths were to him. I honestly thought that having so many indigeonous brothers at Souths would have been a big motivation to stay. At the end of the day, Parra have taken a punt. Time will tell whether it was a good move for either party. Unfortunately, no matter how things pan out, it seems that Souths have taken a few steps back and success seems that little bit further away.

Souths clearly made a decision not to lock in Chris Sandow, earlier in the season. His contract was up and Souths were hedging their bets by not signing him. Then when its clear they cant pay him market rates, they try and spin a load of BS about the family at Souths and all that dribble. Face up to it Souths management, Sandow leaving is through your poor decisions period. Why shouldnt a young talented football player with a short career in NRL not try and maximize his earning potential? You talk about loyalty, but when it comes to it, you show Sandow none. All the Alan Bond talk and Rusty sniping is a joke. Sandow didnt need a Alan Bond , he needed his club to value him as a player and lock him into a contract and pay fair market value. You didnt and you have lost a gutsy gifted player who is a pleasure to watch and stands for all the core values that Souths holds dear. Chris Sandow will be missed, but as sad as I am he's leaving, good luck to him. When can we get Wikileaks docs into Souths management emails regarding this hopeless decision?

Sandow shown moments of brilliance but analise his play and you will see he is a low % player and sometimes comes out looking great. All his attempted intersepts go against him most of the time and only leave big holes in the defence line for his team mates to fill. He often looks good but take a look who is feeding the ball to him. A bit like big GI really, was in great form at the Storm when he had class inside him feeding him the ball. We just hope that the Bunnies take a look at the old footage of GI and learn how to feen him the ball and he will repay the team with big some trys.

In order to widen participation, and reduce the impact of losing on less able participants, there has been an introduction of non competitive physical activity to traditionally competitive events such as school sports days, although moves like this are often controversial.
