The Purse Project brings together seven leading global charities to celebrate 100th Anniversary of International Women’s Day

Giant purse displayed in Martin Place Sydney to raise awareness of issues faced by women in developing nations Sydney - 8th March 2011 - Seven international development agencies have partnered to create The Purse Project, an initiative which aims to raise awareness about the 100th Anniversary of International Women’s Day and to highlight the issues facing women in developing countries. These include poverty, hunger, lack of health care or proper housing, inadequate access to education and finance and the denial of human and civil rights. International Women’s Day is celebrated across the world on March 8.

Organisations supporting The Purse Project are, The Global Poverty Project, The Hunger Project, International Women’s Development Agency, Muslim Aid Australia, Opportunity International Australia, Oxfam and Plan International Australia.

The Purse Project is centred on a unique artwork being installed at Martin Place in Sydney, on 8 March 2011. The artwork – a giant purse – will be displayed for the day. The purse will be filled with contents including a healthcare card, credit card, library card, grocery card, voting card, union card, school bus pass and a key. The purse represents the many services that women in the developed world have had access to in the last 100 years (such as healthcare, financial services, education and the right to vote), reminding Australians that there is still much to be done to bring these services to women in ALL nations.

The public are encouraged to visit the art display in Martin Place, Sydney. The purse will be available for viewing from 7am to 3pm.

Helen Merrick from The Purse Project said, “This year marks the significant 100 year milestone for the celebration of International Women’s Day. The Purse Project was established to celebrate the achievements that women have made in the last 100 years, especially economically, politically and socially. However, as far as we have come, there is still much we must do to improve the lives of women, particularly in developing countries.

“Women perform 66% of the world’s work, produce 50% of the food but earn only 10% of the income and own 1% of the property. We hope that The Purse Project display acts as reminder to Australian men and women of the work that still needs to be done to accomplish a better standard of living for all women in all nations.”

About International Women’s Day

International Women’s Day is held annually on 8 March all over the world to celebrate women and their achievements. In 2011 International Women’s Day will celebrate its 100 year anniversary, commemorating the remarkable things women have accomplished. The day aims to empower, inspire and engage women in the progression and development for women’s equality throughout society. Although the day is held to celebrate women’s achievements, it’s also a time to understand and discuss the concerning issues that women still face.

Some interesting facts for International Women’s Day • Over 70 per cent of the world’s poor are women and girls. • Two thirds of the world’s 774 million illiterate adults are women. • 120 million women are living in poverty in India alone - this is more than 10 times the total female population of Australia. • Throughout the world, over half a million women die each year from treatable and preventable complications of pregnancy and childbirth, an average of about one death every minute. • 75 per cent of the world’s women are unable to receive bank loans because they have unpaid or insecure jobs. • The average woman in Indonesia will earn a wage of A$2,263 per year, compared to an Australian woman who will earn A$29,759.
