The Minister for Education and Training, Verity Firth, has opened an exhibition at the Art Gallery of NSW today featuring some of the best work by last year’s Higher School Certificate art students.

The exhibition is part of this year’s ARTEXPRESS, which showcases the best works of art completed by students from 180 government and non-government schools across NSW as part of the 2010 HSC. Forty-four artworks are on display at the Art Gallery of NSW exhibition.

“It’s a tremendous honour for these students to have been selected for the prestigious ARTEXPRESS exhibition,” Ms Firth said.

“This year’s exhibition program will feature the work of 326 students, who have been selected from almost 9800 HSC Visual Arts students. “The exhibition showcases an outstanding collection of work representing a broad range of subject matter, approaches, styles and media.

“The works show the depth of artistic talent we have in NSW schools. “The NSW Visual Arts course develops an understanding of the role of art in all forms of media, and in both contemporary and historical cultures.”

ARTEXPRESS is a series of exhibitions over an eleven month period across metropolitan and regional NSW. Artworks are selected from a pool submitted for the NSW Higher School Certificate Visual Arts examination.

ARTEXPRESS is a joint venture of the office of the Board of Studies New South Wales and the NSW Department of Education and Training.

ARTEXPRESS’ major sponsor is Integral Energy. Supporting sponsors are S & S Creativity Unlimited and University of Western Sydney.

The official ARTEXPRESS Carrier is Grace Fine Art.

Patron to ARTEXPRESS is The Sir William Dobell Art Foundation.
