Sensis refuses to remove my personal details from the Whitepages
I found my personal address and mobile numbers listed in the Whitepages.com.au and I assume in the print version as well[if anyone gets that anymore]I rang Sensis and was advised that they can’t amend their own database and remove my details, and said my Telco carrier is responsible.
I called my previous Telco Vodafone whom I am no longer with[twice] and was told it would be removed.
When this didn't happen, I again rang Sensis and as emailed back see below.
The person was condescending and kept repeating that they could not in fact alter their own data base, and point blankly refused to.
I have clearly stated in writing that I don't give Sensis permission to publish my personal details. Sensis as the publisher is responsible for the information that appears in the public domain, despite their claims they cannot amend their own data base.
The Email header is “! Email “ now thats clearly a email from Sensis, wouldn’t you say?
“Thank you for contacting Sensis. While the White Pages produces the database all residential entries are provided to us via your service provider as per our Privacy Policy. Sensis do not add, amend or remove any of the residential information in the White Pages. In order to remove a residential listing you will have to arrange to have a silent number with your phone company and then a ‘service order’ (an electronic request to update details) will be sent from them to Sensis & your listing will be removed from our database so it will not be appearing in the White Pages directory, on www.whitepages.com.au or on Directory Assistance 1223. Please note- if you remove the silent number from your phone your details will be submitted to Sensis & your listing will appear in those mediums again. If you have any further questions please contact Customer Care on 1800 810 211.”

Makes sense though - Sensis has no way to determine you are who you say you are, whereas Vodafone do (as they have a relationship with you). If Vodafone are no longer your service provider then you should contact your current provider. Imagine the shenanigans that could Take place if Sensis removed listings on the request of anyone who called them.

@Abbott Precisely !!!! hit the nail on the head, that's exactly how its done :)

@Abbott @1234 I have requested Vodafone[who are no longer my mobile telco] to remove my number twice. I also have a Telstra land line[silent] so in fact Telstra can very easily identify who I am, as I have am account with them. The point you are both missing is Sensis is responsible as they are the publisher of the content. As useless as Sensis is, do you really believe they can not amend their own data base?? This appears to be the case! I know a case where a private address and phone number was published of a well known person, and Sensis was forced to pay a significant amount of money. The SMH can't hide behind someone else having access to their database and nor can Sensis. If you believe they can please advise under what law?

It is amazing that people sign up to a contract, do not read the contract and then whinge and wine when they do not like what they see. READ the contract you signed when you first had your landline and mobile accounts set up. You agreed to have your name and address placed in the White Pages - hence the inclusion in the Sensis database.
Jumping Joe posts
@Rodger Anderson, you make some incorrect assumptions. Sensis does not publish my home phone number as I requested they dont.[that is my right] Voda- [was] my previous mobile provider, and I have on two occasions requested they notify Sensis to remove my details. Voda have not done this. It's irrelevant what was agreed to in some old contract[1997] as the owner of my personal information, I requested the publisher of the information cease making my personal details public. As is my right. Sensis is the party here, who needs to take responsibility for it's own data base, and stop blaming other Telcos and the customer for their own system failures. Ultimately as the publisher, Sensis are responsible.
Jumping Joe posts
@ABBOTT perhaps you would like to disclose that you work for Sensis??
@Abbott posts
Joe, it's not a system failure. Sensis are bound by the Data Supply Agreements they have with other carriers NOT to remove a listing without an express instruction from the carrier. I can't spell it out any other way - contact your current mobile service provider and ask them to notify Sensis of your wish to have your service made silent.
Jumping Joe posts
@Abbott, thank you for advising you work for Sensis. Your views are perhaps a little conflicted. The carrier doesn't own the rights to my personal data. I do. Vodafone is no longer my carrier, therefore they have no valid contract with me. As I have stated, its not through lack of trying to get Vodaphone to cancel my details, now three times as I sent an email as well. Fact remains Abbott, publishers are ultimately responsible for what they publish. Sensis surely must have the ability to override its own data base?

Hi Joe. My name is Damian from the Corporate Affirs team at Sensis. The informtation that you have received from various sources on this Blog is correct, Sensis cannot remove your details without the consent of your existing carrier. What I can do is check to see if we have received such a request. If you like, you can send me your details at Damian.Glass@sensis.com.au and I will let your know. Thanks. Damian

Hi Damian, I have today for the fourth time contacted Vodafone to request my details be removed from Sensis. I will give them 48 hours and see if it happens this time. Vodafone isnt my existing carrier, I have ported to Optus. So I'd ask why isnt this information deleted when I leave Vodafone? I do appreciate you contacting me and offering to help, and I will take up the offer. Sensis did provide an email address for me to also make a request to be delisted as I was having such a drama. I have not heard back[wpsavess@sensis.com.au]

@JumpingJoe. You seem to be suffering a logic issue Joe.Or ignorance. This is not an issue of ownership of personal information. You have missed a key piece of information that a number of people have tried to assist you with. In short, you need to get Optus (yes your CURRENT provider) to send a request to Sensis. Not Vodafone. If your number is with Optus then as you said, you no longer have a relationship with Vodafone. You need to contact Optus. They send the request (at your request as you own the information). Sensis removes. If they don't, then follow your current course. It often pays to review the details before jumping the gun. It sounds like it has caused you quite a lot of unnecessary stress. If after all that you still feel that your issue has not been resolved to your satisfaction then you can elect to take the matter to the Telecomunications Ombudsmen. I did.

I have had a white pages listing for a terminated landline for over 2 years. White pages shows me with two numbers of which only one is active. This thread prompted me to call my service provider (Telstra) to have it removed. I was told that as the landline was cancelled in their system that I had to contact Sensis directly. It was only after a bit of pushing after reading these comments that the helpdesk person said he would look into it. Somehow I have no confidence it will be resolved.

@Jenn, I'm not stressed, just frustrated and sick of crap Telco customer service. I assumed it was Optus, my new provider but in fact they havent provided my details to Sensis.. It was Sensis that said it was Vodafone and I think requesting my details be removed is enough. Hence why I gave up and requested Sensis do it. They can't apparently.. @Damien above indentified himself as Sensis employee and gave his contact details, which I appreciated and have given Vodafone a last opportunity to fix this before I contact him. Gripes are often shared experieinces and web sites like Whirlpool.net provide consumers with whats really going on and valuable feedback. For me this has been positive, despite a few people bagging me. I was hoping someone would say i did this this and this and was able to solve it.
Ex Sensis employee posts
It's all quite simple really, you need to contact Optus, and understand the process : Telstra under the Telco Act has to publish the White Pages and they pass this obligation onto Sensis, you decide to go with another carrier (not Telstra) and didn't pay extra for a silent line and your carrier is legally obliged to pass on your information to Sensis so they can fulfill Telstra's obligation to print the phone book. You don't have a contract with Sensis so they can't follow your instructions to delete the number, you have to contact Optus and get them to instruct Sensis. I'm not supporting or condoning Sensis but that is how it works :)
Ex Sensis employee posts
Forgot to add that when you ported from Vodafone to Optus, Vodafone should have notified Telstra (who pass it on to Sensis) that they ported your number to Optus. Because Telstra (& Sensis) didn't get notification that you had requested a silent number then Sensis leaves your number as is in their database. Hope that makes sense
Jumping Joe posts
Ex Sensis, I think your second comment makes the most sense, I no longer have a phone with Voda so it should have been cancelled.Optus had not sent it to Telstra/Sensis. I did email Damian[above] from Sensis and didnt get a reply. In the end it finally dissapeared. Thanks for all your feedback good and bad. Goes to show you Sensis do care what people say, but its how you do that counts. I still stand by the fact that if you can't modify a publication that you put out then there is something clearly wrong with your data base.
Another ex Sensis worker posts
What my ex Sensis colleague has said is generally correct, but don't forget that Telstra/Sensis must publish the White Pages under the laws of the telecommunication act, and all fixed line numbers must be published unless the customer asks for and pays for a silent line (and for non-Telstra customers the service provider has advised Telstra/Sensis of this). I'm sure that Sensis can quite easily modify its databases and publications, but because the telco act stipulates what must be in the publication they can't just simply delete data unless a proper process is followed

Ex sensis crews, the dude wanted his mobile number removed. If you are publishing somoenes personal details and they request that number be removed then Sensis must have a responsibility to do so. Sensis have been sued sucessfully in the past and have had to pay out huge $$. Looks like this case is close, though it brought up some interesting comments. Hey Jumping Joe, what's your mobile number? I cant find it in Yellow pages? hahaha just jokes mate

Sensis are impossible to contact. I have an old contract I want modified and have spent endless time trying to change the situation. It is incredibly frustrating for a busy person and I have decided to cancel any involvement in them as a result. Who uses white pages anyhow. I've decided not to pay my bill and see what happens.

What right does Sensis to charge a fee to make a line silent or remove my details from their publication. We had a very loose link to a business that advertised our home phone number in the Yellow Pages 13 Years ago and since our dealings with this business was broken Sensis have refused to remove our details from the Yellow pages despite numerious lettes and phone calls. Just give up on them they wont listen.

I'm currently trying to remove my old mobile number from 10 years ago. Vodafone still have it in my name with my personal details - but the account is deactivated. I've tried speaking to them to remove my details from the Whitepages but the offshore outsouced person told me they couldn't do it. Um, it's de-actiavted, so why is it still going to Sensis? Not sure where to go from here, I think I'll just keep escalating it up the manager food chain until I get to someone who knows what the hell is going on. But I like the idea of suing ... got me a home loan to pay off.
