NSW State Government has signed a 50 year lease with Village Roadshow to build a $80million theme park called “ Wet ‘n’ Wild” in Prospect in the heart land of Western Sydney.

The theme park is expected to atttract up to 1 million vistors per year, and employ over 300full time local people. About 1.2 million residents live within a 20-kilometre radius of the site, and 3.3 million people live within a 40-kilometre radius.

Village Roadshow expects to immediately begin preparations to lodge a Major Project Application with the Department of Planning, who would assess the proposed development on its merits under Part 3A of the Environmental Planning and Assessment Act 1979.

If approved, Village Roadshow expects construction to start next year, and for the theme park to open in time for the summer of 2013.

Announcing the development, Village Roadshow Chairman, Robert Kirby, said: “We are very excited about the opportunity to bring our highly successful water theme park concept to Sydney, this is a huge step forward for one of our foundation businesses and to develop Wet ‘n’ Wild Sydney.”

Village Roadshow say the new park will employ state-of-the-art water efficient design, filtration and recycling technology to maximise water re-use on site. Part of the development cost includes a contribution of $5.2 million by Village Roadshow towards funding improvements to the surrounding road network by the NSW Roads and Traffic Authority so that enhanced traffic infrastructure will be completed prior to the park opening.

Local heritage groups have expressed concerns that the development will destroy the region's historically significant rural landscape.

Blacktown Council say the development will generate enormous recreational, employment and economic benefits for the people and City of Blacktown, while providing visitors and tourists with one of the most exciting theme parks in Australia.

The development is also consistent with Blacktown City Councils strategic vision for its people and City, establishing itself as a great place to live, work and play.

Blacktown Council said “We look forward to seeing the plans and working closely with the State Government, Village Roadshow and all involved to bring this exciting theme park to life.”

The location for Wet ‘n’ Wild Sydney is Reservoir Road, Prospect, close to the M4 and M7 motorways. Check out the location here: http://maps.google.com.au/maps?client=sa...

Too bad it couldn't be something more like a new Wonderland. I loved going to Wonderland - the rollercoasters and the rides were great. I am not a big fan of waterparks though. NSW already has "Jamberoo Recreation Park" in the Illawarra region. We need something more like a "Dreamworld" in NSW. I always head up to Queensland just to go there - but I would rather spend my money in this state.

Grad3s posts

This is a perfect idea for western sydney. Jamberoo Action Park is a far less superior part with only one world class water ride. The reason for Village Roadshow to build this instead of another thrill park is to test out how sydney reacts to the concept of a 'theme park' Good work Village roadshow for making this decision. Very happy. Hope to see more of your parks down here in the future.

The proposed Moorebank Intermodal site would be suitable for this waterworld project, better regulated noise management then 24/7 container and freight movements with all its dangerous, toxic and chemical spills. It is really nicely positioned close to the M5, M7 Liverpool/holswothy station and next to the Georges river, this way at least, the public would get to enjoy the riverfront. Wonder how much we have to "bribe" the planning department with to change its mind? 6 million dollars perhaps of state sanctified bribery?

Kel posts

To Grad3, yes I agree - any type of themepark planned for Sydney is good news. I have been praying for the day we got another themepark ever since Australia's Wonderland closed down more than 5 years ago... However, I don't understand what you mean by "the reason for Village Roadshow to build this instead of another thrill park is to test out how sydney reacts to the concept of a 'theme park'" / - what exactly is the difference? Would you not classify "Wonderland" as a themepark?

Kel posts

Just a follow up - If Wonderland was not a "Themepark" - you had better tell whoever wrote the page on wikipedia. They have it listed as a "Themepark". (Sorry, I am not trying to be rude, I am just trying to understand what you mean in your comment).

Why is it that section 3A gets such an airing on a regular basis. This piece of fly by night legislation with all of its amendmends, too many to count, passed at midnight usually, is rolled out at every oppertunity to override the legitimate legislation that was put in place to protect the citizens of NSW from overdevelopment and environmental damage. The pollies who back this Section 3A and all of its ammendments are not acting in the best interest of their constituents, they want to avoid any scrutiny of whatever project they're involved with. Do they ever declare their pecuniary interest in any of these projects or is there some hanky panky going on? In this instance the 5 million dollar "state sanctified bribe" is blatantly shoved in our faces to the delight of the legislators and their cohorts. It seems if they can't get what they want with the present legisalion, they just legislate or amend to bring it to fruition.

Ray Van posts

Sure makes it look like that the 5 Million dollar "contribution" put it under section 3A in a hurry!!!!! How can a playground be deemed a critical piece of infrastructure? They are drawing a very long bow on this one! Where else are non disclosed "contributions" being paid to obtain an A3 rating and who is getting the "contribution"? Hope the next government gets rid of Section 3A and all the "insider trading" with big business and land developers.

It is about time Sydney got a new theme park. Wonderland was a great place and a shame it closed. I agree with Ray Van on the location. Having the park at Moorebank would be more beneficial because it would be closer to public transport (for those who can't drive) and would create more jobs in the south-west where the jobs are needed most.

Happy Man posts

I am so happy they are building it there. I live just 4 kms from the park so i can go there every weekend ! Lucky me!

Niki posts

It is wonderful, finally Sydney will get a themed park, we really need it, we miss Wonderland I hope it will be approved soon

Ray Van posts

Whoopee we're getting one too! We can sit and watch the containers moved in and out of the Moorebank Intermodal and slowly die of diesel fumes poisening us as we watch them go by!

i think this is a really good idea. i went to wet n wild in the holidays and loved it and i also think its great thats its not all in queenlands i will defently go to the new one in sydeny so esxcited :)

kristy posts

I agree with jake, although wet'n'wild is a great idea, they need to add to it. Movieworld and dreamworld would be excellent additions. The general public like to have options and cheap deals like they have in the Gold Coast. Having just wet'n'wild will be good for a few years but park goers will soon realise that there is nothing else to hang around for. Hotels and other attractions need to be build near by and there is so much room for it. Hopefully someone who can do something about it realises this and add more theme parks.

Ray Van posts

There's going to be nothing cheap about Wet 'n Wild. Hang on to your hat when you find out how much the admission rip offs are going to be. The ordinary family with kids may want to take out a loan to afford a day's outing at the new place! The 5 million contribution to local road infrastructure will have to be paid for by someone, guess who?(it ain't Santa Claus)

lyn posts

Are all you supporters mad?? Wonderland closed - remember? What tourists are going to leave the city and beaches to visit western sydney? I say put this money into resources like public transport....put more teachers in the western suburbs schools so we can have smaller classes. Ordinary families will not be able to afford entry to this monolithic structure. What about a few more public pools so families can cool of -- seeing they can't afford to turn their air-con on?

Ray Van posts

lyn, the pollies in power in NSW need a side show to divert attention from the real life issues for people of Sydney and NSW, this Wet "n Wild is it. What you're suggesting is perfectly reasonable, the pollies aren't, they're all jumping ship before they get "tarred and feathered".

Jadely posts

Lyn, my friends have been complaining for many years (or ever since Wonderland closed), that there is nothing to do in this region anymore. I mean, sure you can visit the beach - but you can usually do that anytime or anywhere in Australia. The reason why so many families visit Queensland regularly ain't to go to the beach... I feel bad for the kids whose parents haven't got enough time to take them all the way up to the Gold Coast.

Jadely posts

Oh, and I just read your comment Kristy - I absolutely agree with you! Queensland is the premier state at the moment because of all those themeparks they have up there. NSW practically has nothing at the moment. I like the fact that a new themepark will create hundreds of job opportunities for people - that is another factor to consider.

lyn posts

Ray Van, at least you're one of the thinking individuals who share skepticism with me. Most of the others are blind-folded to think that the pollies are actually concerned about poeple 'out west'. They are not as we both know. The suckers are easily smoke-screened. I wish people would see things for what they are, wake up and call them to account with pages like this and say WE DON'T BELIEVE YOU!!! What do you REALLY intend to do for us? More transport, smaller classes, airconditioning in classrooms so kids don't have sweat running down their backs and can't concentrate. Of course; only the chosen few in the eastern and northern suburbs are permitted to be adequately educated!!!! Otherwise the masses may rise up and hold pollies accountable.

lyn posts

Let's have a referendum to see who among us working class taxpayer suckers agree to Gillard giving our millions to Muslim schools in Indonesia, when they hate us? As a teacher I can assure you that our own schools are desperate for funding as are our hospitals and public housing for OUR OWN CITIZENS. Age pensions are totally inadequate and there are many other injustices in our own country needing addressing. Gillard, is your head up your rear end???? Remember you were not elected by the majority of us!! Tread carefully, you are on very thin ice.

What a great idea blacktown council is always thinking ahead for their residents with wonderfull rsl club and workers club and at last an aussie rules club now wet and wild keep up the good work blacktown council but what happened to the planned indoor snow jump and ski run that was planned years ago it was also going to be built on the edge of the M4

Melon posts

I think this is a great idea, I am now actually excited! I hate that wonderland closed down, I had a wonderpass and when I didnt I would go on a saturday night after 1700 for $12, it was brillant. I am obsessed with amusement parks and rides and I myself literally fly up to QLD just for their crap theme parks, that's if i'm not visiting awesome theme parks in another country. I'm more than 99% positive that at least 92% of people in the surrounding areas can afford to turn their air conditioners on, and also be able to afford to take their families to a theme park! I also believe that the proposed location at prospect is a superb idea as it will be located next to practically nothing. Great thinking 'village roadshow' I just wish someone would have thought of it sooner!!!

I think that dis is a great idea. Compare Australia to America. We are in the stone age compared to them. It is about time that we boosted ourselves. It is a good investment for the NSW economy and a good attraction for the Australian people. I cannot wait until this is open just before Summer 2012. Congratz to the government.

It's a fantastic idea !! It's a great location too at Prospect. I have been pushing and hoping for a fun park out here ever since Wonderland closed down through it's bad management. Fun parks and theme parks are great fun for everyone. They are also much cheaper and healthier than gambling that is for sure. I hope they include a few rollercoasters as well as water rides. City people have the beach right on their doorstep but it takes a few hours to get to the beach for people in the western suburbs such as Mt. Druitt so we desperately need fun parks out here. Queensland has plenty of fun parks and we want the same here in NSW. There are plenty of people out here that want fun parks. The waterworks was great and wonderland but they closed through bad management. Stop being negative you silly grumpy people, its a great idea and about time. I love it ! I can't wait !!!

All the above posts are a COMPLETE DISGRACE. You people know nothing and should all be ashamed of yourselves. "Local heritage groups have expressed concerns that the development will destroy the region's historically significant rural landscape." What an understatement. Prospect is a deeply historical area, with the proposed site having been farmed since the whites arrived here at the first settlement of australia. The historial society have fought for over a decade to preserve this beautiful sanctuary, and now Village Roadshow, and it seems Blacktown council - are determined to destroy this irreplaceable landscape. SHAME ON YOU ALL FOR THIS ABORTION OF A DEVELOPMENT. And - when this disgusting monstrosity closes - too late! the entire area will already have been ruined for eternity. Village roadshow, blacktown council and you ignorant people on this board make me sick.

I don't understand what the majority of you a cheering for. I love theme parks as much as the next person, and then some. Howevere wouldn't we all prefer & benifit from a theme park that's not seasonally challenged. I used to take the family to Wonderland several times throughout the year. Don't you think it would be more practicle to have a theme park which caters all year round with rides, attractions and yes also WATER RIDES? I mean if we're going to construct something which benifits and generates revenue & tourism & employment, then I think it would be best to get it right the first time with nil limitations and restrictions by lowering the risk of closure within a few years after operation due to the elements.

well about time....Queensland seems to get all the attractions in Australia why? Sydney is the biggest City in Australia and we need to have more tourist attractions here. El Calballo Blanco would be an ideal place for a theme park ...the land there is going to waste. We need something closer to Sydney city. Luna park is too small......Wonderland used to be awesome..but it was too far out of the City CBD and hard to get to.

Wet n Wild will be fantastic !! It's exactly what we needed and wanted for a long time. A monorail should be used to connect Wet n Wild with Eastern Creek Raceway and Featherdale and the sporting stadiums at Rooty Hill and either Doonside or Rooty Hill railway station. Monorails are great and cheaper than rail. They don't need a driver, they can be built almost anywhere easily with out buying heaps of land and without overhead wires. Just build them away from flats and units. Guess what, Sydney is getting rid of their monorail because the snobs in Sydney apartments don't want it, well instead of dumping it in the rubbish why don't we use it out here to connect up these great places. A few more monorail segments can be added as needed and the monorail can be refurbished and made to go a bit faster, which is much better. If other companies want to they could get the monorail and a monorail station near them such as Cricketers Arms pub/hotel, Rooty Hill R.S.L especially if they contribute some cash to help build it. Wet n Wild is excellent, they could build a multistorey car park above and below ground with screening trees around it to save land space for more slides. I hope in future they add some rollercoasters as well. This park is long overdue. hooray !!!

I was born and grew up in Blacktown, and have been back and forth for over 30 years. I went past the area today and thought I was in WA at one of the mining sites. The development is well and truly underway, and MASSIVE! I felt very melancholy thinking about all the market gardens that had remained steadfastly after most of the surrounding area had been allotted to industrial developments. Unfortunately, that's just time and "progress". Hopefully the historic 'Cricketers' Arms' will stay & not change too much (yeh, right). We've lost the "farms", but at least kept the Drive-In (what an icon; only one left in Sydney, I think?)I have to look for something positive about this development. Lots of people out of work in Western Sydney, and hopefully it will offer opportunities for some of them. I can't think of much else that is positive about how things look now. Boo hoo. Time will tell, but I still feel sad.
