The shortfall in funding threatened to end this eight year success story until the Clovelly Community Bank stepped in and donated $50,000 to ensure Kool Kids Club kept its door opened for another year.
Merran Lang a Director of the bank said “it was a initiative that would have been tragic to lose for the community, and we as a Bank are here to help the community and this wasn’t about being a good corporate citizen.”
Lang continued “ The Bank puts 80% of its profits back into the local area, but this was the largest single amount for us.”
Shane Brown CEO of South Sydney Youth Services explained “Kool Kids Club provides after school and holiday program, mostly to Aboriginal Kids from La Perouse and Maroubra areas. To be part of the program the kids must attend school , and this has resulted in a 60% reduction in truancy”
Kool Kids Club focuses on physical, sporting and social activities including cooking. There is a Aboriginal cooking classes on bush tucker and a indigenous surfing camps and many other activities.
“We have relationships with La Perouse and Soldiers Settlement Primary Schools who identify kids who are likely to fall between the cracks.” said Brown.
The kids were also a finalist in this year’s Tropfest, which was a film “Two Of Me” about being stolen by a mad scientist.
