The Championships were officially opened today by Nick Lalich MP, representing the Minister for Sport and Recreation Kevin Greene.
“The Australian Pony Club Championships is a highly competitive event featuring the cream of Australia’s equestrian crop,” said Mr Lalich.
“Some of the young competitors here today may even go on to the Olympics, as have other Pony Club members including four riders in the Beijing silver medallist Eventing team.
“This year’s Championships are hosted by the Pony Club Association of NSW.
“The week-long showcase of skill and horsemanship features Dressage, Eventing, Showjumping and Mounted Games.
“It’s a wonderful opportunity for Pony Club members to boost their competitive experience and meet other riders from around Australia.”
Sport and Recreation Minister Kevin Greene commended the Pony Club for encouraging young people to take up physical activity as part of a healthy lifestyle.
“As well as training some of our future sporting champions, Pony Club promotes the physical, mental and spiritual development of young people through riding and horsemanship,” Mr Greene said.
“The discipline and respect that horse riding instils is evident in the young riders participating in the Championships.
“I congratulate the Pony Club Association of NSW on organising an outstanding event and I wish the very best of luck to all the competitors in Sydney this week.”
The 2009 Australian Pony Club Championships run from 12 to 18 July at the Sydney International Equestrian Centre, Horsley Park. Entry is free for spectators.
