National Rugby League Chief Executives have been told that Western Sydney is on track to achieve 25 per cent growth in participation over the next five years.

Already Western Sydney has a record 20,000 players, three NRL clubs, three NSW Cup teams, five Bundaberg Red Cup teams and 70 junior clubs.

“Behind all the speculation about Western Sydney, the fact is that Rugby League is here and growing and any code that is considering coming into the area shouldn’t take our position lightly,” NRL Chief Executive, Mr David Gallop, said today.

“While it’s too early to compare figures with 2008, we already know that Penrith alone has 20 new teams for 2009.

Gallop said that the “sort of football” being played by Benji Marshall, Matt Bowen, Jamie Soward, Michael Jennings and Jarrod Sammut, was only going to increase the following of rugby league in Sydney’s west.
