A knife-wielding man put a female staff member into a headlock during a lunchtime robbery at a store at a western Sydney shopping centre.

Two men approached the saleswoman at the counter of a shaving supplies store in a shopping centre at Penrith just before 1pm (AEST) on Sunday, threatening her with a knife and demanding she open the cash register.

"The woman attempted to get the attention of a colleague at the rear of the store before the man took the woman into a headlock," police said on Monday.

The second man acted as a lookout during the robbery and both escaped with cash and were last seen running across Station Street.

Police interviewed witnesses at the shop and officers are reviewing CCTV images.

The first man is described as being between 18 and 23-years-old and of olive complexion.

The second man is also described as being between 18 and 23.
